NAID-Canada Dumpster Study Leads to National Coverage
Privacy protection is of the utmost importance for BEST Shredding, the clients we safeguard, and the markets we do business in. This is why we feel it is important to make known the dangers of not safeguarding your company’s confidential files on a regular basis. We want to continue to provide our clients and our markets with the most up-to-date privacy protection news and developments.
Earlier this month, NAID-Canada commissioned a private investigation firm, the Investigators Group, to covertly examine the contents of 50 publicly accessible commercial dumpsters to learn how much personal information was being casually discarded. The results were surprising and troubling to say the least. For instance, dumpsters behind three out of four doctors’ offices were found to contain personal information, in one case affecting as many as 30 patients. In addition, two automobile dealerships’ dumpsters that were examined contained personal information, including copies of drivers’ licenses, social insurance numbers, and other personal information.
This investigation into the contents of these dumpsters lead to an appearance on Canada’s most-watched morning TV show and reports during the six o’clock and eleven o’clock TV news broadcasts, and also articles in two of the largest newspapers in Canada. It is clear that this type of negative publicity can be severely damaging to any company’s reputation and can drastically affect consumer trust in that company.
All companies have a responsibility to safeguard their employee and customer information and to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands. Never has it been more important to trust your company’s information with a reputable shredding firm, like BEST Shredding, a NAID AAA Certified organization.
